Mark Miller went from big man on campus - a basketball stand-out at a small Minnesota college - to the reluctant shake ‘n' bake sergeant on the front lines of a devastating guerrilla war.
Miller and his Garbage Squad were draftees who tried their best to avoid the action, though it rarely worked. They didn’t want to be soldiers, much less kill anyone. They simply wanted to get out of Vietnam alive, even if it meant disobeying orders.

For the rest of his life, Miller would feel more like a criminal than a proud American veteran. He promised himself he wouldn’t talk about that year in Vietnam. And he hasn’t, until now.
